Our most-viewed item in the shop last month. A set of six coasters made from a trimmed oak tree limb. They are approximately 7/16 inch thick and 3 5/8 inches across. The wood has been finished with tung oil and lacquer with a top coat of enamel. The bottoms are covered in black felt for extra protection.

Etsy continues to keep the hits comin’ with their search testing. They’ve now started to display search results with blurry images EXCEPT for the paid advertisements. The ads still have their nice clear photos. Not sure what the marketing genius thought process is for this one. To prove that people prefer to buy items when they can see it clearly in photos? Duh. To force sellers to buy paid ads if we want our photos to display properly? Not cool with that.

Much of our inventory is still hidden by Etsy’s ongoing search experiment. There are also tests going on that involve a more generic shop appearance (no banners, seller can’t rearrange the display order) and hiding shipping costs until an item is placed in the shopping cart. One forward-thinking seller offered this suggestion for a future test:

"Thank you for your patience. We can see from all of the wonderful comments that the hidden shipping costs test was a HUGE SUCCESS!

Next week we will be trying out a new way for customers to experience the items in your shop. Starting next week, all listing images on Etsy will be replaced by random screenshots from “Weekend At Bernie’s”. That way, buyer’s won’t actually know what a product looks like until they receive it. FUN!

We understand you may be worried about an increase in returned items during next week’s test, but please do not be concerned. Remember, without upfront, honest shipping costs OR accurate images of your product, very few sales will actually be made. Customers can’t return an item if you don’t make a sale ;)

If you do find that you are still able to make sales next week during our Weekend at Bernie’s screenshot test, please feel free to e-mail our support team with details so they can help you resolve the problem.

Thanks for your feedback everyone!

Love,
Etsy”

Brillant!

We’ve decided not to list any new items or renew expired items while the search experiment is hiding our items. If Etsy isn’t going to let us make money, we’re certainly not going to let them make any from us on listing fees. We’ll spend the summer making more goods so we’ll be ready for craft shows later in the year. And if the pattern holds from last year, we’ll be visible on Etsy again sometime shortly before the holidays. We’ll resume listing then.

Etsy’s current search experiment still has our shop almost completely shut down. A few people have been able to find our houseware items, so we have made a couple of small sales. Plus, we had a previous customer return to place a large button order. Good thing I’ve been cutting more blanks.

Buttons in progress this week. We’re leaving some maple and walnut unfinished in response to a couple of inquiries we’ve had recently. Etsy has another search test going on right now, which has rendered our shop invisible again, same as another test did about this time last year. Once that is done and people can find us again, we’ll see if these sell.
